Behaviours/The Sex Talk - On Telling Your Child About *Sex*

Disclaimer: Somethings are hard to do and I believe that telling your son about the real facts concerning sexual matters falls into this category. For some people I grant, it is really easy and they can get right into the swing of things. For me it was the complete opposite.

This happened quite a number of years ago when my second son was about ten years old. I was at work and he was staying with my really good friends who cared very much for him. On this particular day my friend had hired a movie for them to watch called I think, "Blue Lagoon" so he and her son, his friend of the same age, were sitting watching the movie while Jenny was in the next room sewing. And this is what she heard my son say to her son during the segment where the young actors in the movie were swimming together in the Blue Lagoon.

my son "where did all that blood come from?"

her son " she cut her foot on a rock"

my son " no she didn't" as he was really peering into the screen.

Jenny is listening to the exchange and just waiting for the help call from her son - a call which came quite quickly!

her son" Mum, can you come here!"

Jenny comes in and says to my son "has your mother told you about the facts of life yet?"

my son "no, we're only up to dogs"

Jenny "well I will tell you all about it" which she did. TG. She even included information about periods so that he would understand any potential women's problems.

Then........she decides to tell him about and indeed show him, the ubiquitous tampon.

Jenny "have you seen one of these before?"

my son "Oh yes - mum said they were for taking off her make-up!"

Sprung - yes I was well and truly sprung on this occasion.

Lesson - One should never lie to children - they nearly always find out the truth. Lesson 2. Do not give your family and friends the ammunition needed (particularly the bit about "we are only up to dogs!- thank you G.) for the numerous laughs across the years since the event - and of course you need to remember that it will get really, really embellished until everyone is falling in the aisles laughing - at you!!!

Yes it is the right of all children to have that education and knowledge so as to enable them to handle those types situations. As soon as they ask a question, answer the question and then assertain if they understood what you told them.

Thanks Just_Rodney for your comments - I would definitely agree with you now - but then I was a bit of whimp on these issues however we make mistakes and people get a good laugh out of them so as long as I didn't mess with my son's psyche ( which he assures me I didn't!) it's all grist to the proverbial mill.

Thanks for this valuable input Ananta65 - all you need is love - no, no that is not correct - what you really need is a specific human value list to achieve experience with high numerical value - good video. cheers.

At least I finally found out, why in Dutch "making a number" stands for engaging in the oldest activity in the world :)

And don't blame it all on yourself. If commercials for tampons show us that you can dance, swim, and play tennis what kind of idea do they expect we get?

Hi Ajcor,

I love this story, and I guess we all have similar ones. I remeber babysitting the eight year old daughter of a friend who seemed scarily clued up. She asked me how long a baby takes to grow in the mummys tummy, and I said nine months. She then said that if she had a baby every year from the age of 20 through to 40 she could have 20 babies. I agreed that the maths was correct, but said that she really, really wouldn't want to have 20 babies. She looked a little sad, then said, 'No, you're right. It would probably make my vagina very sore!' I'm certain I never knew that word at eight, and I certainly would never have thought that one through, but I guess kids are different these days.

At least your neighbor felt comfortable enough to tell him! My parents let me find out everything from sex ed class at school.

Thanks Amanda - we mind a ten year old a few nights a week and she is also scarily knowledgeable - but it seems all the children are now; they are so different to the way we were (I hear a song coming on lol!) - well  better to know than not - 20 babies would be way too many I agree and as for her pain I do believe we would all feel that if her potential life plan came together !

Thanks for your comment KT pdx - and I know my son did attend those classes at school - but at this point in time he had not reached the designated age for this particular class. However it has all come out in the wash so to speak! cheers

Very funny! My parents never gave me "The Talk," and I was soooo grateful. I think I knew more about it than them anyway (or so I thought as a 10 year old).

"Mom told me they were for taking off makeup" - that's priceless! Thanks for a laugh. I needed it!
